Fritzner Alphonse was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti in 1938. He was a childhood friend of the famous painter Calixte Henri, and began painting at the urging of his friend in 1972. His colorful depictions of the people and places he knows best have won him international acclaim. Alphonse's work has been shown throughout the Caribbean islands, in Europe, at the Haitian Institute in Washington, D.C., and at the Organization of American States (OAS), also in Washington. As is readily apparent from his work, Alphonse is fascinated by the female figure; his paintings depict an endless variation on this theme. Even though he has no formal art education, his work demonstrates a keen understanding of the use of color and light.
